Beacon – New York
When you think of Fall you imagine the leaves changing, apple picking and pumpkin patches. One of the best places to spend Fall is in Beacon, New York. It looks like something straight out of a postcard, with its East Coast charm and rolling hills. Its a must go to destination for Fall!
How to get there
Beacon, New York is located in whats referred to as UpState New York. You can reach it by flying in to JFK and taking the train from Grand Central to Beacon Station. It is a great scenic route along the Hudson and a great way to see the changing leaves.
Top Three Things to Do
There are so many different things you can do while in Beacon, here are the top three:
Living in Southern California, apple picking was not a common activity. So it was a top priority for me to experience! I went to one of the local Beacon apple orchards and had a blast. Walking up and down the aisles, the air was crisp and the trees were beautiful shades of orange and red. It was such an amazing experience to walk right up to tree and grab an apple. For those who experience it every fall it can seem cliche, but for a SoCal girl I was hooked. I couldn’t help but to try an apple before I even left!
Another must do activity to do in Beacon is to take a stroll through a pumpkin patch. Pumpkins are on an unspoken sign that Fall is here. I love to walk through and occasionally pose with all sizes of pumpkins. Bonus this is a free activity, if budget is an issue while traveling you can have a great experience without spending a dime!
One of my favorite things to do when travelling whether at home or abroad, is to see the historic buildings. While in Beacon I went to see what used to be the historic Beaconcrest Hotel and Casino. You hike up Mount Beacon and follow the Mount Beacon Incline Railway that was built in 1902. Unfortunately it closed down in 1978 due to financial difficulties. Its a truly beautiful hike, but be prepared it has a steep incline and is farther then you would assume. I was not prepared for the kind of hike it was, but the view at the top was worth it. Make sure to wear good shoes and take water! There are still remains from the old hotel at the top, and you have a great view of the Hudson. A must do for all those who love history and nature.
Upstate New York now holds a very special place in my heart, not only are there great friends but amazing scenery. It should be on anyone’s must see Fall Destination. No matter your schedule, always take the time to explore the world around you. Whether for a long weekend or a trip with no return date, just go. One day you blink and you realize your life is almost over.
Keep a wandering spirit my friends and thanks for following along!
